"Play a la Turka " (2000)

Original Music, Sound Design and Live Performance

This performance took place at New York's Producers Club

and was a Moon and Stars Production

It was Yesim Gulans' NYC premier of her Turkish-New York fusion theater.

The score for this theater piece gave birth to the long form

symphonic poem Symphony East-West -an audio collage combining Asian and Middle Eastern music traditions with Western classical

music and pop instruments fusing western

music production technigues with Far Eastern and

M iddle Eastern musical instruments and traditions.

The oud, koto, shakuhachi, Ottoman vocals, tablas, guitars, strings and

rock drums mix freely together with field recordings from

Japan and Seoul, South Korea.

The movement you are listening to is based on the classical Turkish Ottoman

vocal song "Makhber".
